A dream that became reality |
|
Sydney, January 2000 - In a youth hostel in Australia two women from Rotterdam were lying on a bunkbed and dreaming of how fantastic it would be to have their own hostel in their beloved city Rotterdam!
Six years later in June 2006 Monique Segeren and Mirjam Verschoor again found themselves between some bunkbeds, however this time it were the ones of their own hostel in Rotterdam. The dream became a reality and the result is amazing. ROOM is more than just a youth hostel, it is a real Rotterdam themehostel.

| |
| Each of the 16 rooms has been styled according to a Rotterdam theme. In the Blijdorp Room (6 beds) there are curtains with leopardprint and the walls are painted with animals. With its red walls and golden stars, the Club Room (6 beds) resembles a nightclub and the Port Room (10 beds) – with view on the historical harbour – has the atmosphere of a container ship. |

|
ROOM is so different from traditional youth hostels that several months after opening ROOM already could be found in numerous tourist guides and was put on several favourite lists of foreign media - the previous work experience of Mirjam and Monique in advertising maybe contributing to this as well.
In Australia, the two travellers got the idea for starting a hostel in Rotterdam. Two years later they started with the realisation of the plan.

|
In the years that came they collected many pieces of furniture and decorative items, saved money and made plans, uncertain if they would ever find a suitable (and affordable) property.
That property was found in 2005: in the stately shipping quarter, ideally located between the Euromast, Spido, Erasmusbridge and museum park, there was this unoccupied art-deco building from 1923. A protected monument that originally housed the General Steam Transport Company.
|
|
They have done the renovation pretty much on their own. A contractor did the work on the monumental outside of the building but on the inside the two young women did the most of the work themselves with the help of family and friends. For the thematic design of the rooms, they worked with students of the Artemis Interior and Styling Academy.

Still now Mirjam and Monique do many things in the hostel themselves. Reception, bar, administration, marketing, cleaning, too much to name it all here. But ROOM is a success. "Sometimes it's so busy that is takes quite some effort to keep up with the pace but we enjoy the hostel every single day. It's like travelling without leaving your own city!"

| In the city center... |
ROOM is situated at a superb location. It's located in the city center, in the middle of the historical Shipping quarter (Scheepvaartkwartier). River Maas and the beautiful Veerhaven are just a doorstep away. The Euromast, the Erasmusbridge, the Worldmuseum and Westelijk Handelsterrein are all in the neighbourhood.
The many bars, restaurants and musea close by make the Hostel ROOM an excellent spot for exploring Rotterdam! |
| |
| ...and easy to reach! |
| ROOM Rotterdam is quite easy to reach by tram, train, car and even by boat. More information you'll find at location. |
| |
| A superfun foyer! |
| You can go out to discover Rotterdam by yourself but you can also lay down in the foyer and relax a little bit. Everynight the bar is open until late and regularly we organise unique theme nights and special parties. Happy times! |
