Celebrate with some sass and style as the most colourful party of the year kicks off with some glitter and serious high heels in Rotterdam! This will be the 6th year that Rotterdam Pride has taken place and the theme this year is House of Colours, so expect Autumn to get a rainbow makeover as Pride arrives with a fabulous bang!
19th-29th September 2019 sees Rotterdam Pride scheduled in the city, with all things LGTBQ celebrated, discussed and paraded! This is the time to recognise and enjoy Rotterdam's diversity and LGTBQ community as cultural activities, workshops, events, exhibitions, and parties are organised across the city. As an all-inclusive event; everyone is welcome to celebrate diversity; regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. This is about informing, recognising and celebrating, and there is even a Pride Family Festival - Unicorn & Zebra - that is fun for all generations where kids and all family members are welcome, especially in costumes. For those attending Pride Walk and late-night parties: expect them to be on the outrageous side!
Pride is for the promotion of equality and dignity of everyone regardless of their sexual orientation. The city hosts this event to promote the rights of those from the lesbian, gay, transgender and bi-sexual (LGTB) community and their increased visibility and social acceptance. The celebration is open to everyone to enjoy, and the events are aimed to be informative and inclusive- there are plenty of workshops and discussions to engage with, or movies, theatre and talks to attend. And of course, it wouldn’t be Pride without a little colour, so expect some theatrics from the stage events, including drag night specials and some great parties! Get your glitter ready; there is a whole host of events to take part in right here this September.
The Pride Programme of EventsThe official Pride Programme includes art installations, colourful club nights, plenty of activities and workshops, Pride Walk, and some fabulously hosted drag queen specials. There are also a host of fringe events including ones at Room Rotterdam and Unboxing Rotterdam Movie Classes in the run up to the week and the Pre-Dinner Show on the 14th. Also don’t miss the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 special with Cornald Maas! Here are our choice of the highlights for Pride 2019.
To get the fun started there is a run-up show on 21st, with a colourful drag night from 8pm; The House of Hoes with Miss JJ and Ma’ma Queen getting the crowd excited. Taking place on 22nd September for the official start are inspiring events including talk the Philosophy and Art of Living, at the Library of Rotterdam, and the art exhibition at the Kunsthal Rotterdam from the famous Joana Vasconcelos: I’m Your Mirror. There’s also the Real House of Colours immersive (and colourful!) art installation at Kruisplein where you can dive into the rainbow and the history of its symbolism for the LGTBQIA community.
Other day-time events include Pride in the Park which takes place Sunday 22nd September at Dag Plantage Schiedam from 4.30pm, where everyone is invited for a picnic – you just need to bring your own food and drink. For more food and socialising check out Tafel Tild, or Table Time, which is the chance to have a meal together with other LGTB or curious new friends. From 9pm until 3am the Super Disco event, Rainbow: Pride Opening Special. This event is at the Gay Palace on the corner of Witte de Withstraat and promises to be a vibrant night full of… more rainbows!
House of Pride takes residence at Theatre Rotterdam 23rd where their headquarters will be based for the whole event, providing a relaxed space to chill out with some tunes and the space for some pop up action. There are also support and consultation groups available including free sexual health checks. Open House also opens its doors 23rd with music, Dungeons and Dragons and open discussion groups. For those into the arts, Man Down is a theatrical performance 24th that takes a hard look at sexism and male privilege, and Queer Poetry takes place on 29th.
If you like to shake your booty there is an afternoon Dance Workshop hosted by The Hang-Out 010 on 24th and 25th, and the POC Latino Pride edition 25th September where you can expect to ramp up the heat with their spicy food and tunes! There are trans choir workshops, live podcasts, Confab 2019 for students, and Pink Salon for LGBT Elderly (exactly what it sounds like – a place for the elderly to mingle with those of a similar age); so truly something for everyone!
Rotterdam Pride Walk: Parade of Love is the main street event that everyone is getting their extravagant outfits on for, taking place on 28th September from 11am to 1pm. This is an all-inclusive celebration in the street so get your flags, friends and family along for a resplendently dressed parade of love!
